New timetable. New uniform. New stationery. Maybe even a new school or college.
September brings a fresh start – but if you’re struggling with breakouts, congestion or oily skin, feeling confident heading back into the classroom isn’t always quite so straightforward.
At Face & Body Collective, we know how much troublesome skin can affect confidence, particularly during the teenage years.
The good news?
You don’t need a bathroom shelf full of trending products or a complicated 10-step skincare routine.
In fact, when it comes to younger, breakout-prone skin, simple, consistent and appropriate skincare is often the best place to start.
So, with the new school and college year approaching, here’s our guide to getting your skin – and your routine – back-to-school ready.
First things first: teenage breakouts are incredibly common
During the teenage years, hormonal changes can increase oil production within the skin.
Combine excess oil with dead skin cells and blocked pores and you can begin to see blackheads, whiteheads, congestion and inflamed spots appearing.
For some people it’s an occasional breakout.
For others it can become much more persistent.
The face isn’t necessarily the only area affected either – breakouts can also appear across the chest, shoulders and back.
And while social media can sometimes make it seem as though everybody else has perfectly clear skin, the reality is very different.
Troublesome skin during adolescence is extremely common.
The important thing is learning how to care for it properly.
Don’t declare war on your skin
When spots appear, the natural reaction can be to attack them.
Stronger cleanser.
More exfoliation.
Another acid.
Scrubs.
Spot treatments.
Then another product you saw on TikTok.
Before long, you’re using six different active ingredients and wondering why your skin feels irritated.
More isn’t always better.
Over-cleansing and repeatedly using harsh products can leave skin feeling stripped, dry and uncomfortable.
Our approach is different.
Rather than fighting your skin, we want to understand it and work with it.
Start with the basics
A teenage skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated.
For many people, a sensible starting point is:
Morning:
Gentle cleanse → Appropriate moisturiser → SPF
Evening:
Cleanse → Targeted skincare where appropriate → Moisturiser
That’s it.
Once those foundations are established, other products can be introduced if they’re actually needed.
Consistency matters far more than having the biggest skincare collection amongst your friends.
Cleansing matters – but be gentle
Cleansing helps remove excess oil, dirt, sweat, sunscreen and other impurities that accumulate on the skin.
For breakout-prone skin, it can be tempting to look for something that leaves the face feeling extremely tight or “squeaky clean.”
That isn’t necessarily what we want.
A cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean and comfortable – not stripped.
For teenagers who play sport, go to the gym or simply become sweaty during the day, cleansing appropriately becomes even more important.
And one simple tip that’s easily forgotten:
Take your makeup off before bed.
No matter how late you get home.
Your skin will thank you for it.
Stop picking!
We know.
It’s easier said than done.
When a spot appears the evening before school, squeezing it can feel like the obvious solution.
Unfortunately, repeatedly picking and squeezing blemishes can increase inflammation and potentially contribute to longer-lasting marks.
Hands also touch phones, keyboards, door handles and countless other surfaces throughout the day.
Try to keep them away from your face.
If persistent spots or congestion are bothering you, that’s something we’d much rather assess properly than have you standing in front of the bathroom mirror trying to perform your own extraction.
Be careful with skincare trends
Teenage skincare has become huge on social media.
Some of that increased interest is brilliant. Young people are becoming much more educated about sunscreen, ingredients and looking after their skin.
But there’s another side to it.
Not every trending product is appropriate for teenage skin.
And just because somebody online uses a particular acid, retinoid or high-strength active doesn’t mean you need it too.
Skincare should address your skin, not somebody else’s routine.
Before introducing lots of active ingredients, particularly if you’re already experiencing irritation or persistent breakouts, getting some professional guidance can save an enormous amount of trial and error.
Don’t forget your everyday habits
Skincare products are only one part of looking after breakout-prone skin.
A few simple habits are worth remembering:
- Change your pillowcase regularly
- Clean your phone screen
- Avoid constantly touching or picking your face
- Remove makeup properly before sleeping
- Cleanse after becoming particularly sweaty
- Keep hair and styling products from repeatedly sitting against breakout-prone areas where possible
- Don’t share makeup brushes or applicators
- Wash makeup brushes regularly
None of these individually represents a miracle cure.
But good skincare is often about lots of sensible habits working together.
And yes – moisturiser still matters
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding oily or breakout-prone skin is that it doesn’t need moisturiser.
It does.
The important thing is finding an appropriate formula for your individual skin.
Trying to completely dry out oily skin isn’t our objective.
We want skin that feels balanced, comfortable and well cared for while addressing the concerns that are actually bothering you.
What about professional facials?
This is where we can help.
If you’ve spent months buying different products without really knowing what you’re trying to achieve, coming into clinic gives us an opportunity to start from the beginning.
At Face & Body Collective, the first step isn’t about selling somebody the biggest treatment package possible.
It’s understanding what’s happening.
What does your skin currently look and feel like?
Where are the breakouts occurring?
What products are you already using?
How frequently?
Are you experiencing blackheads and congestion, occasional blemishes or something more persistent?
From there, our therapists can discuss which professional treatments may be appropriate and, importantly, help you establish a sensible homecare routine to support your skin between appointments.
Building a skin journey
For troublesome skin, we particularly like the idea of a journey rather than a one-off facial.
Skin changes take time.
A treatment can be a fantastic starting point, but what you’re doing during all the days between appointments matters enormously too.
That’s why we can combine professional treatments with homecare recommendations and then review how your skin responds.
We can adjust things.
Simplify things.
Introduce something new when appropriate.
Or sometimes tell you to leave your routine alone and give it time to work.
The aim isn’t perfection overnight.
It’s progress.
A note for parents
If you’re reading this because your teenager is becoming increasingly self-conscious about their skin, sometimes the most useful first step is simply giving them somewhere supportive to talk about it.
Breakouts might seem like a small issue from the outside, but they can have a very real impact on confidence.
Our treatment team understands that.
We want younger clients to feel comfortable asking questions without feeling embarrassed or judged.
And importantly, professional beauty treatments aren’t a substitute for medical care.
If we feel someone’s skin concerns would be more appropriately assessed by a GP, pharmacist or dermatologist – particularly where acne is persistent, painful, scarring or more severe – we’ll say so.
Sometimes the best advice we can give is knowing when something sits outside the treatment room.
Start September feeling confident
Going back to school or college should be about seeing your friends, starting something new and looking forward to the year ahead – not spending every morning worrying about the latest breakout.
So this September, perhaps your fresh start could include your skin too.
Not a cupboard full of new products.
Not another complicated routine.
Just a sensible plan, some consistency and the right support.
